Jamison

Jamison paced the grass between his house and Rose’s on silent paws. His bear had taken control the moment his feet had hit the back step of her house. He’s shifted, not caring who might have seen the tiny bit of magic spark the air.

As the bear paced Jamison pondered how he’d fucked up so badly that the woman he could now admit to loving, was afraid of him? Hell, he’d known the day would come when she’d run fast and far away from him when she learned just how much of a creeper he was for moving across the city to be near her, dropping all of his other clients, putting all of her money in a joint savings account, and then topped it off by showing up at her work.

His bear kept sending him images of her in their den back home in Alaska. Of walking beside the river as they looked for berries, or–and this was the gut puncher–of her nursing their cub.

None of that would ever be possible and if he was honest with himself none of it had ever been possible. He was a Kodiak bear shifter. Humans had no idea they lived with shifters. It was against shifter law to tell an outsider that they even existed unless that outsider was a mate.

He sighed, letting the bear have full reign. He’d been selfish and Rose had suffered for it. He deserved her scorn. When he returned–fur matted full of prickly burs and pine needles–he trundled into his house in bear from. He’d just nosed the fridge open when he was smacked with something hard.

“Get out! Go on bear! Get out!” Rose’s frantic voice was pitched to glass-shattering decibels. Before he could turn and protect his face from what he thought was a broom handle the distinct click of a button being pressed and the hiss of a chemical being dispensed filled the air.

His bear roared, and he screamed inside his head before he shifted and raced for the sink. He shoved his face in the sink, grappling for the sprayer hose and cold water.

“Oh lord, oh god, ohhh fuck me sideways! What the hell are you‽” She screeched in his ear. Before he could try and reassure her that everything would be okay he felt the air shift as the broom headed for his head again.

The burn from the bear spray was taking all of his conscious effort to survive meant that his reflexes were slower than even a human and the broom connected with the side of his head, knocking him free of the flow of heavenly cool water.

“Rose!” He bellowed, again blindly searching for the water hose.

The broom made a second swing at his head but the water had at least washed away the chemicals enough for him to focus on his surroundings. The broom was within inches of his face when he reached up, grabbed the handle, and pulled. Rose didn’t release her weapon. He swung her and the broom around until he had her pinned between his thighs and the sink.
